2024 has been an alarming year for INEOS Grenadiers fans. The UK-based team, already no longer the peloton powerhouse it once was, has fallen even further behind in the overall polls this year, while behind-the-scenes dramas are leaking into the public consciousness that are of major concern.
Going forward, INEOS Grenadiers have attempted to hit the reset button ahead of 2025 by changing the team’s performance structure and reportedly even opting to finally set up a development department for the next generation. One of these new names calling the shots is Kurt Asle Arvesen. The Norwegian was there at the birth of Team Sky in the early 2010s and most recently worked as sports director at the Uno-X Mobility lineup.
Speaking to TV2, Arvesen explained how the INEOS Grenadiers want to stop their decline and return to the top of the World Tour. “As I understand it based on the conversations we have had, the focus will no longer be as much on the overall standings as before, but on the pursuit of stage wins and one-day races,” comments the Norwegian, indicating : “complete change to the UK-based team’s typical plan of action.
Since the formation of Team Sky and the name change to INEOS Grenadiers, the overall ranking has clearly been a priority. Grand Tour victories at the Tour de France, the Vuelta a Espana and the Giro d’Italia by notable names such as Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Egan Bernal and Tao Geoghegan Hart were the highlights, but minor successes included stage race podiums there were plenty of them on the Grand Tour.
A move to one-day and stage success is likely to be welcomed as there is currently no real Grand Tour contender in the squad, despite the high potential of players like Carlos Rodriguez and Thymen Arensman among others and the two Giro podiums in two years Geraint Thomas. But can the change bring INEOS back to the top? Only time will tell.
