Stan Wawrinka last competed at the Basel Open, where he reached the round of 16.
Wawrinka became the oldest player to win a match in Basel, after fellow Swiss Roger Federer, who won the Basel Open in 2019 at the age of 38.
The performances at his home tournament encouraged the former world number three and he is satisfied with his physical well-being. Not only does Wawrinka still have a passion for the sport, but he has also confirmed that he will continue playing tennis in 2025.
“My plan was always to keep going,” he said during his post-game press conference. “How I feel, both on the tennis court and physically, how well I train, what level of play I achieve… But of course there is also the reality of the results and rankings.
“If I no longer have the opportunity to take part in big tournaments that I enjoy, it could affect my motivation. So far that hasn’t been the case.
“Now it’s up to me to do everything right on the court to improve my ranking and have the chance to choose the tournaments that I like. But my passion for tennis has not diminished.”
Stan Wawrinka is leaving Basel openly after a tough defeat against Ben Shelton
In a close match at the Basel Open, Ben Shelton struck out 20 to secure a 7-6(2), 7-5 victory over Wawrinka.
The veteran had his chances against the American, but he saved all five break points he faced and took his chance to break Wawrinka’s serve in the second set and end the match.
After the game, Shelton said of Wawrinka: “We joked in the locker room before the game that he [Wawrinka] will be on tour as long as I live.
“He has a lot of experience and a lot of love from all over the world. He has done incredible things for our sport. Especially here in Switzerland. You can tell by the fan support today… I had to smile sometimes today because it’s obviously against me.
“But it’s so cool to see a country and a tournament get behind a guy like that who is such an icon. Greetings Stan. I don’t think I’ll still be out here winning games at 39.”
