Demi Vollering, one of the best-known names in the women’s World Tour peloton, had a rather mixed 2024. Although she claimed victories at La Vuelta Femenina, among other notable races, the Dutchwoman previously missed out on Tour de France Femmes success against Katarzyna Niewiadoma She ended her season under a cloud of controversy after the World Championships in Zurich.
The reason for the controversy? The very questionable and somewhat self-defeating tactics of the Dutch all-star cast in the elite women’s road race at the 2024 World Championships in Zurich, for which Vollering, as the nominated team leader, subsequently bore a large part of the brunt, according to criticism in the Dutch media.
Notably, Dutch analyst Thijs Zonneveld offered a scathing criticism of their performance on his podcast In het Wiel. “I can’t explain it. I have never seen such a bad master class. Okay, maybe Tokyo was worse, but that’s close. I find it absolutely scandalous. I find what Vollering did scandalous,” reflected Zonneveld in disbelief after the women’s road race.
However, with her 2024 season now over, Vollering has taken the opportunity to escape the World Cup hustle and bustle and treat herself to some well-deserved rest and relaxation on holiday in Turkey. “Relaxing after a stressful time,” comments the 27-year-old on her official Instagram account, where she has been posting regular updates in the last few days and seems to be enjoying the break. “The weather is perfect, now it’s time for some nice walks in the old town, looking for beautiful beaches, looking for the best places to eat good food and discover turkey delicacies!”
One thing that is still unclear is where Vollering’s future lies. The former Tour de France winner is widely expected to leave the SD Worx – Protime team when her contract expires on December 31st. However, despite intense rumors and speculation, no team has yet made a formal announcement about signing Vollering.
