Tyson Fury has confirmed he will maintain his training squad for his return match with Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury lost a split decision to Usyk in their undisputed heavyweight world title fight in May, and afterward there were questions about whether his cornermen’s instructions during the fight were clear enough.
Head coach Sugarhill Steward will remain in charge for the December 21 rematch, continuing to work with Andy Lee and having Fury’s father John in camp.
But the corner can still act differently on fight night.
“Tyson is no fool. He’s a very sensible guy. He knows boxing. He knows what needs to be done and he will make it happen,” said promoter Frank Warren Sky Sports.
“Of course you don’t want a lot of voices, but you have to understand that it was his father who was in the corner with him, he wanted his father in the corner and his father is worried about his son, especially when he was injured .” In this ninth round, emotions can take over.
“But you know what? This corner cannot be emotional. She needs to be cool, calm and collected and I’m sure that will be the case next time.”
Lee says the team will take note of that advice.
“When you lose, you are open to criticism. If we had won the fight, no one would have said a word, but there were probably too many voices in the corner,” Lee said Sky Sports.
“It’s not good for a fighter, especially when you go back to the corner, that’s the grace. You don’t have to be bombed.”
“So I’ll keep my mouth shut. All I can do is control myself.”
The staff will remain the same and their confidence in Fury to make the necessary adjustments is high.
“There will be no changes. Sugar will say what he will say. John will say what he will say. And I don’t usually talk. I just told Tyson he wasn’t capable. It was me.” “I said that and I had to let him know,” Lee said.
“The better fighter wins the rematch. Usyk will be better, but Tyson can be much better.”
“I don’t think we saw Tyson anywhere near his best in the first fight.”
