John Gosden is keeping his options open ahead of Emily Upjohn’s appearance in the Breeders’ Cup next week.
The versatile five-year-old enjoyed Group 1 success over both 10 furlongs and a mile and a half and was among the pre-entries for both the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and the longer Breeders’ Cup Turf against the colts and geldings at Del Mar .
Emily Upjohn is Paddy Power’s 5/2 favorite for the 1.5 mile race against her own gender, having chased home Arc heroine Bluestocking and ParisLongchamp runner-up Aventure in the Prix Vermeille on her last outing.
However, Gosden, who trains Sea The Stars’ daughter alongside son Thady, is content to stay in both races for as long as possible before deciding on a particular mast.
Gosden said: “She ran very well, was third in the Prix Vermeille the other day and obviously the winner won the Arc, so that’s rock solid form and she was second again in Ireland in the Pretty Polly to the same filly, so that’s her.” run very solid.
“Maybe we’ll look at the turf on Monday – you get to enter twice, and if you enter twice you watch the races and see what you think, so there’s a possibility.”
“She’s run against the colts before, the start boxes are at the start of the backstretch rather than the furlong, you have more of a run over the back, so that’s an advantage too.
“The draw is very important at Del Mar – when you start getting big draws and double numbers, it gets pretty complicated.”
One horse that definitely chooses the turf is the horse trained by Brian Meehan Jayarebe. The Zoffany stallion was a real star for his Manton yard, finishing in the top three just once in seven career starts.
His successes this year have included victories at Hampton Court at Royal Ascot and most recently the Prix Dollar on Arc at the weekend. Between these runs there was a good performance against Economics in Deauville.
Should he emerge victorious in California, he would be Meehan’s third winner of the race after Red Rocks (2006) and Dangerous Midge (2010).
“We are delighted with Jayarebe – he has been in great form since his win in France. He works tomorrow (Friday) and leaves early Saturday morning. Sean Levey will ride him,” Meehan said.
“Prix Dollar’s form has really improved and we’re excited to see him move into the Breeders’ Cup. We have been fortunate to have great success in the Breeders’ Cup in the past and are looking forward to it.”
He added: “We believe the mile and a half journey in America will suit him perfectly. It’s great to have Sean on board. He knows the colt very well and he is riding very well at the moment.”
