Grigor Dimitrov remains positive despite recent mixed results as he bids for a place in the ATP Finals.
The Bulgarian has jumped back into the top 10 after a decent first half of the year.
Grigor Dimitrov announced his comeback right at the beginning of 2024 and beat Holger Rune to win the Brisbane Open.
Since then, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for Dimitrov, who has suffered through some frustrating injuries and retirements.
After reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon, the 33-year-old was eliminated after just eight games in the first set against Daniil Medvedev.
Grigor Dimitrov is still “encouraged” after a turbulent year.
Unfortunately for the Bulgarian, he was unable to back up his opening win in Vienna against Zhang Zhizhen.
Against such a great opponent, Tomas Machac beat Dimitrov, his fourth top 10 of the year, 6:7, 6:4, 6:3 and reached the quarterfinals.
Dimitrov had a challenging season on the court, which put a damper on his ambitions for the ATP finals.
“It’s a long year. It’s a tough year. It’s a busy year,” Dimitrov told Tennis.com. “Everyone is playing well and the competition is fierce. Being able to do this at such a level these days is something I’m very grateful for.
“I am encouraged by the challenge that lies ahead of me every day: changing the surface, the pitches, the balls and everything together.”
“I really don’t take it for granted. I don’t know how long this will all take, but I’ll enjoy the ride. I always say that.”
Has Grigor Dimitrov fulfilled his potential?
Dimitrov has delivered brilliant performances throughout his career, but has struggled to live up to the high expectations placed on him at the start. https://www.thetennisgazette.com/tag/tomas-machac/
At least initially, he was compared to Roger Federer because of his elegant playing style – a big challenge!
But Dimitrov has been hampered by injuries throughout his career to win a Grand Slam title – something many believed was achievable given his talent.
Although he remains a dangerous player on any given day, the tennis world still wonders if he could have achieved more.
