Patrick McEnroe was impressed by Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliance after watching him at the Laver Cup.
As vice-captain of Team World at the tournament, he had one of the best seats in the house to watch the players perform.
There was no more impressive competitor than the French Open and Wimbledon champion, who stole the show in his Laver Cup debut.
Team Europe defeated Team World 13-11 and Alcaraz won eight of those points, including winning the final game of the tournament against Taylor Fritz.
What did Patrick McEnroe say about Carlos Alcaraz’s performances at the Laver Cup?
Carlos Alcaraz went into the Laver Cup with some uncertainty about his performance following his shocking second-round exit from the US Open in August.
However, Alcaraz performed well in the Davis Cup group stage just before the Laver Cup and his confidence only grew in Berlin.
As well as praising Alcaraz’s play, McEnroe praised the Spaniard for his approach to the game, which puts him in the best position to succeed.
“That’s what stood out to me the most. It’s amazing how professional these guys are, the attention to detail in everything they do and how close they play,” he told Tennis Channel.
“I marvel at the progression of each new generation of players. Watching Alcaraz this year was like these guys took it to a new level. You always ask yourself how the game can be better, how can the players improve?
“Then you see this guy basically take the ball in dead run, early, cut the angle and hit like a Mac-10. As if it were normal. As if this were a normal play. For me, it’s just great to watch it up close.”
Who did Carlos Alcaraz beat in the Laver Cup?
Alcaraz played four games for Team Europe at the 2024 Laver Cup.
In his two singles matches he defeated Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-4 before defeating Fritz in the final match to win the title for Team Europe.
Alcaraz played two doubles matches, the first alongside Alexander Zverev, but they were beaten by Shelton and Fritz.
The world number two managed to turn the tables in his second doubles match, this time teaming up with Casper Ruud against Shelton and Frances Tiafoe and claiming a 6-2, 7-6(8) victory.
